MNS is proud to announce that the 8th Street Pedestrian Bridge has been awarded 2010 Project of the Year award in the Structures category from the Central Coast Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA). The 8th Street Pedestrian Bridge in Carpinteria, CA is a 1-span steel arch suspension bridge, 161-ft long and 5.5-ft wide. It spans Carpinteria Creek and connects 8th Street with Calle Ocho in the Concha Loma neighborhood of Carpinteria.
MNS provided construction management and inspection for this unique bridge project. The bridge consists of two pipe arches that converge at the apex and suspend a steel decking, with a walking path placed on top of the decking made from ipe lumber, and transitions to street level on both sides by way of ADA-compliant concrete ramps. Bridge abutments are concrete with a river rock texture, placed on top of augered cast-in-place piles. The MNS team took great care to adhere to regulations working in the sensitive riparian habitat of Carpinteria Creek, habitat for the endangered tidewater goby. Other efforts included assisting with public relations with the surrounding residential community, relocation of a water main pipeline and other utilities, construction of a new drainage structure and curb opening inlet, and preservation of a triple-trunk Sycamore tree near the base of the bridge.
