Overview

The State Route 237/Calaveras Boulevard Near Term Improvements Project is proposed along westbound Calaveras Boulevard between the southbound Interstate 880/Calaveras Boulevard off-ramp and the State Route 237/McCarthy Boulevard on-ramp in the City of Milpitas. The purpose of the project is to reduce congestion and improve traffic operations in the project area. The project will add a high occupancy vehicle (HOV) preferential lane at the westbound State Route 237/Calaveras Boulevard on-ramp and extend the westbound State Route 237/McCarthy Boulevard HOV bypass lane to the McCarthy/Calaveras Boulevard intersection. The project improvements will provide westbound HOV vehicles the ability to switch to either the Calaveras Boulevard on-ramp or McCarthy Boulevard on-ramp depending on queue length. Improvements at the westbound State Route 237/Calaveras Boulevard on-ramp include:

  • Widening the on-ramp to accommodate a new HOV preferential lane to accommodate two general purpose lanes and one HOV lane.
  • Modifying ramp metering, including removal of existing ramp metering cabinet and nearby pull boxes that conflict with new lane geometry.

Improvements at the westbound State Route 237/McCarthy Boulevard on-ramp will include:

  • Extending the existing HOV bypass lane to the signal limit and associated receiving lane on Calaveras Boulevard.
  • Restriping to the right most left-turn lane on Calaveras Boulevard approaching McCarthy Boulevard from a left turn only lane to a left and through lane to the HOV only lane.
  • Replacing existing signs on the signal posts with signs to guide the HOV traffic to the first through lane.

The project is being funded by the VTA 2016 Measure B Program and local funds from the City of Milpitas. Construction is scheduled from 2022 through 2023.
